Hunter’s Point South takes off with 25,000 applicants in first week

Posted on 10/24/2014 by New Yorker

The New York Observer reported on Friday evening that according to Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, in the first week of the Hunter’s Point South Affordable Housing Lottery, about 25000 persons have already applied. These figures are considerably higher than earlier estimates, indicating that the project’s marketing phase has gotten off to a flying start.

The Observer also stated that Van Bramar in an interview estimated the final applicant total could reach near 100,000 by the time the application period closed in December.

With 924 affordable housing units expected to come on stream within the next year, including 186 targeted at low income earners, the initial number of applications appears to underscore the vast demand for affordable housing in New York City, and more specifically on the Long Island City waterfront.

The Hunter’s Point South project upon completion is expected to provide some 5000 affordable units in seven high-rise buildings, the first two of which Hunter’s Point South Commons and Hunter’s Point South Crossing are expected to commence move-ins in the spring of 2015.
